Texas Student Dies After Coat Gets Caught in Car Door at School

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss,” the Borger Police Department said.

BORGER, Texas — A tragic accident in the school drop-off line has led to the death of a Texas student.

According to the Borger Police Department, officers were called to Gateway Elementary around 8 a.m. on Friday, January 24, after reports of a student being injured in the drop-off area.

Police say the second-grade student, identified by a GoFundMe campaign as Serenity Campos, was exiting the vehicle when her coat became caught in the door as the guardian drove off.

“Despite the immediate efforts of a senior school administrator who tried to intervene, the incident occurred so quickly that it couldn’t be prevented,” the BPD said in a statement.

School staff performed life-saving measures before Serenity was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this heartbreaking accident,” the police department said. “The entire community mourns this loss. We ask for patience, understanding, and compassion as the family navigates this unimaginable grief. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this profoundly difficult time.”

A GoFundMe has been created to help the family with funeral and other final expenses.
