Concerns among Keller ISD parents continue to escalate amid the potential division of the district—an issue that has already sparked significant controversy. Now, the situation is further complicated by a possible change in leadership, a move parents argue comes at the worst possible time.

Another highly anticipated Keller ISD school board meeting is set for Thursday evening, just two weeks after more than a hundred community members voiced their opposition to the proposed district split, citing a lack of transparency in the decision-making process.

Parents have raised alarms that a split could disproportionately impact less affluent areas, stripping them of access to Keller facilities while burdening them with a significant share of the district’s debt. However, a majority of board trustees continue to assert that financial constraints make the split necessary.

Superintendent’s Future in Question

Adding to the uncertainty, Superintendent Dr. Tracy Johnson may soon step down. Thursday’s meeting agenda includes two key items: “Consider and take possible action on superintendent voluntary separation agreement” and “Name an interim superintendent.”

Dr. Johnson stunned attendees at the Jan. 16 meeting by publicly opposing the district split—an unexpected move that led her to hint at an immediate resignation.

“I know I will probably be in trouble for speaking. I am okay with that,” she stated. “I am prepared. I have my letter of resignation retirement. I do have that here.”

Her comments have fueled further speculation about behind-the-scenes developments within the board.

Trustees, Parents Express Frustration

Trustees Joni Smith and Chelsea Kelly—both vocal opponents of the split—expressed their frustration on social media earlier this week, stating they were once again blindsided by internal decisions.

Parents have echoed their concerns.

“I assumed it happened a little bit before that, especially if we are already naming an interim superintendent tomorrow. More has been happening than we are aware of,” said parent Amber Jacobs. “We obviously have concerns. Who are they going to place? We hear this name and that name come up. No one knows for certain.”

Meanwhile, some community members are questioning the board’s true motivations.

“Maybe they aren’t doing this for the right reasons. Maybe they aren’t doing this because it’s in the best interest of the students,” said parent Matthew Mucker during the Jan. 16 meeting. “Maybe there are other reasons for the board’s actions that the public should be aware of.”

What’s Next?

The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. The previous meeting saw overwhelming opposition to the district split, with every speaker during public comment voicing disapproval. It remains to be seen whether supporters of the board’s decision will step forward this time.
