South Carolina has claimed the No. 1 spot on U-Haul’s 2024 Growth Index, surpassing Texas and Florida as the most sought-after moving destination in the nation. This ranking, derived from over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul trips, highlights a significant migration trend toward the Southeast, driven by the pursuit of affordability, better job prospects, and an enhanced quality of life.

While Texas and Florida continue to attract movers—ranking second and fourth, respectively—South Carolina’s surge underscores a broader shift in migration patterns. Meanwhile, California remains at the opposite end of the spectrum, recording the highest outbound migration for the fifth consecutive year.

How U-Haul Tracks Migration Trends

U-Haul’s Growth Index is based on net gains and losses from more than 2.5 million one-way truck and trailer rentals across the U.S. While not a direct indicator of population growth, this data provides valuable insight into migration trends nationwide.

Key Highlights for 2024:

  • Top Gainers: South Carolina, Oklahoma (+30 spots), Indiana (+19 spots), and Maine (+18 spots).
  • Biggest Declines: Colorado (-31 spots), Nevada (-24 spots), Wyoming (-22 spots), and New Mexico (-21 spots).

Texas and Florida: Consistent Contenders

Texas remains a dominant force, holding the second position in the rankings and maintaining a top-two spot since 2016. Florida, despite dropping to fourth place, continues to attract movers with its warm weather, no state income tax, and overall appeal as a retirement haven.

California: A Persistent Exodus

California’s enduring position at the bottom of the Growth Index reflects a sustained trend of out-migration. High housing costs, steep taxes, and quality-of-life concerns are frequently cited as reasons for the exodus. This pattern aligns with a broader migration away from the West Coast and the Northeast.

Looking Ahead: Migration Trends for 2025

As 2025 approaches, U-Haul anticipates that migration patterns will remain consistent, with Southeastern states continuing to draw movers seeking cost-effective living and lifestyle enhancements. These factors are likely to sustain the current trends in the near future.
