Plano Earns Prestigious “Tourism Friendly Texas” Certification, Boosting Economic Growth and Visitor Appeal

Tourism is a cornerstone of Texas’ economy, contributing approximately $193.8 billion annually and supporting over 1.3 million jobs statewide. While the state’s major cities often capture the spotlight, vibrant communities like Plano are increasingly recognized for their significant role in driving tourism and bolstering the local economy.

Recently, Governor Greg Abbott honored Plano with the Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation, awarded by Travel Texas in the program’s inaugural year. This recognition highlights the city’s commitment to harnessing tourism as a catalyst for economic development, job creation, and attracting visitors both domestically and internationally.

“We are proud to serve as a one-stop resource for visitors eager to explore the unique experiences Plano has to offer,” said Millerann Moya, Assistant Director of Visit Plano, in an interview with Local Profile. “Receiving the Tourism Friendly Texas designation underscores Plano’s dedication to delivering exceptional hospitality and enriching experiences. This acknowledgment is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance tourism, support local businesses, and showcase the attractions, restaurants, and events that make Plano a premier Texas destination.”

Plano’s Thriving Visitor Economy

In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Visit Plano successfully hosted 158 events — ranging from corporate conferences and association meetings to sports tournaments, social gatherings, and government events — collectively generating 48,000 booked room nights. During the year, Plano welcomed 3.6 million overnight visitors, contributing an impressive $1 billion in annual visitor spending.

Plano’s strategic focus on tourism as an economic engine is fostering a dynamic visitor experience, driving job growth, and benefiting local businesses. Tim Fennell, Director of Travel Texas, highlighted the city’s balanced approach: “Plano is a city that seamlessly blends business and leisure, offering a destination where visitors can enjoy both work and play in one place.”

Discovering Plano’s Charms

Plano’s appeal lies in its diverse range of experiences for travelers. Visitors can wander through its charming downtown, filled with boutique shops and local dining options, or enjoy signature events like the colorful Plano Balloon Festival. The city’s extensive green spaces and nature preserves provide ample opportunities for relaxation and outdoor exploration, making it an ideal spot for families and adventure seekers alike.

With world-class dining, family-friendly attractions, outdoor adventures, and a vibrant cultural scene, Plano offers a welcoming atmosphere that perfectly balances modern amenities with natural beauty. Its central location and proximity to neighboring cities like Frisco and Dallas make it a convenient home base for visitors exploring North Texas.

“Plano is honored to receive the Tourism Friendly Texas Community certification,” said Mayor John Muns. “This recognition reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional experience for visitors and showcasing the diverse offerings that make Plano a vibrant and attractive destination. From our dynamic dining scene and cultural events to our world-class festivals, we are dedicated to creating lasting memories for everyone who visits.”
