Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as part of its plan to conquer Southeast Asian territories; the raid, which claimed some 2,400 American lives, prompted the United States to declare war against Japan the next day, triggering World War II.

In separate tweets, the White House said, we solemnly reflect on the tragic events of December 7, 1941, and honor those who perished.

Vice President Mike Pence wrote, we remember the tragic events that changed the course of history 78 years ago, and honor the memory of those we lost as they fought to defend our Nation and our freedom.
