McKinney’s Mayor Chimes in on ‘Black State of Emergency’ Controversy

McKinney, TX Mayor George Fuller (City of McKinney)

McKinney, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – The mayor of McKinney chimes in on recent actions by a controversial city councilman.

Mayor George Fuller told our newsroom that Councilman La’Shadion Shemwell’s attempt to get council to adopt a proclamation calling for a ‘Black State of Emergency went too far.

Shemwell’s actions came on the heels of a Fort Worth police shooting of Atatiana Jefferson a little over two weeks ago and the Dallas police shooting of Botham Jean.

Fuller said, “There is an ongoing concern that the African American community has, this much beyond that. It was an indictment of the entire state of Texas, every city every law enforcement agency; just extremely divisive rhetoric.”

One clause of the proclamation reads “Whereas the State of Texas and its local governments have declared war on black and brown citizens by conspiring to kill, injure, oppress, threaten, and intimidate, and to willfully deprive citizens of their constitutional rights while acting under color of law.

The McKinney Police Officers’ Association has called on Shemwell to resign.
