DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) — Officials with the XFL announced the names of all 8 teams on Wednesday, including the team here in Dallas… the Renegades.
They made that announcement by playing videos simultaneously in each of the cities.
But if the league name, The XFL, sounds familiar, it should.
It launched once before back in 2001 and lasted just one season.
Vince McMahon, of wrestling fame, owned the league then and he owns it now.
But Dallas’ head coach and GM, Bob Stoops says he thinks things will be much different this time around.
“Our leadership, they’re set up for this, for the long haul,” Stoops said in an interview with WFAA. “We’ve got TV contracts that are really solid and excellent. And they’ve taken their time putting it together.”
Stoops retired from coaching the Oklahoma Sooners in 1999.
He says he decided to come out of retirement for the league for several reasons.
“I love the Dallas area,” Stoops says. “And this is a chance to work with some older players that are good football players. And, you know, just the timing of it.”
Stoops and the Director of Personnel for the team, former Cowboy Daryl “Moose” Johnson, will start choosing players in mid-October.
The XFL kicks off the weekend after the Super Bowl, in February of next year.
They’ll play a ten game season, with the Renegades making Globe Life Park their first home.
