12 Dead, 4 Wounded – 3 Seriously, in Virginia Beach Mass Shooting

UPDATE 6.01.2019 3:35 PM – 3 people remain hospitalized in serious to critical condition, total 4 injured, 12 dead in the gun slaughter at a Virginia Beach city office Friday afternoon.  Head of trauma at one VB hospital describes the critical condition patient’s injuries as “devastating”.  Gunman is identified as 40 year old DeWayne Craddock, a city employee, who opened fire on his co-workers on several floors of the targeted building.  Witnesses say the gunshots came so quickly in succession, they suspected automatic weapons. Gunman was killed after a long gunfight with police.

UPDATE 11:27 PM – Police say after they have notified relatives, they will – once- release name of the gunman.  Police say they don’t want the gunman to be the focus of this crisis, or become an example to others.

UPDATE 9:33 PM – Death toll rises to 12; five to six more still in surgery with gunshot wounds. Shooter is described as a disgruntled long time employee of the City of Virginia Beach.  FBI and other agencies are assisting Virginia Beach officials

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – Police say 11 people have been killed and six others injured in a mass shooting at a municipal building in Virginia Beach.

Police Chief James Cervera said Friday that a shooter opened fire and shot “indiscriminately” at workers inside an operations building in the Virginia Beach Municipal Building Friday afternoon. Cervera said police returned fire, killing the suspect.

There was no immediate word on the extent of injuries of those wounded.

A police spokesman told the newspaper the shooter opened fire in Building 2 of the municipal center, which is next door to City Hall.
