HBO Series Inspires Donations to Remove Confederate Statue

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The series finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones’ is inspiring donations to buy Dallas’ Robert E. Lee statue at auction.

Pete Freedman is behind a GoFundMe Page raising money to buy the statue for no less than $450,000 to allow the city to recoup money spent to take the statue down. If Freedman has the highest bid, he plans to melt it, like he says Drogon did the iron throne in ‘Game of Thrones.’ But Freedman if he isn’t the highest bidder, Freedman will give the money back.

“We’ll refund everyone directly and we just won’t buy it,” Freedman said.

The deadline to bid is June 5. Freedman’s page is hundreds-of-thousands of dollars shy of its goal.

“There’s been more action on the absurdity of the action than the donations themselves,” Freedman said.
