WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump’s latest immigration proposal calls for a dramatic shift in the green card system. Instead of favoring relatives of people already in the U.S., the proposed changes would prioritize those with high-level skills, degrees and job offers.
Democrats are already criticizing the proposal while some Republicans are expressing skepticism. Trump is set to announce details of the plan Thursday afternoon.
The proposal is aimed at improving border security and revamping the green card system. Trump wants to see green cards move toward a more merit-based system that prioritizes highly skilled workers instead of relatives of those already in the U.S.
