ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF) – The Arlington Police Department has arrested a suspect regarding a Sunday hit and run accident involving a bicycle officer. 37 year old Steven Turner turned himself in Monday evening after seeing media coverage of the accident and after he was contacted by the rideshare company LYFT.
According to Arlington Police, Officers responded to a request for assistance from a uniformed bicycle officer who was working an approved, off-duty assignment for AT&T Stadium at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday. The officer, who was riding a marked and distinguishable bicycle with lights for night use, was responding to a dispatched call in the 800 block of N. Collins Street. The officer was riding alongside another bicycle officer as they were traveling across Collins Street westbound near Rogers Street to respond to a business on the other side of the street.
As the first officer made it to the turn lane, Police say the second officer was in the northbound inside lane and was struck by a dark colored or black Sports Utility Vehicle with what was believed to be a lighted ride share company emblem on the dashboard. The impact caused the bicycle officer to be ejected from the bike and land on the street. The SUV driver continued northbound on Collins Street and failed to stop and render aid. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of a second car traveling in close proximity to the suspect car. The officer was transported to Medical City of Arlington Hospital for injuries and was released about three hours later.
“Thankfully our officer was wearing a bicycle helmet and will be okay,” said Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson. “Our team will work diligently to identify the driver of the vehicle who fled the scene.”
