DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says his personal priority before leaving office in five months is putting a plan together that will work to combat childhood poverty in the city.
“If I can leave this city with an organization that they’ll use to combat childhood poverty here in the coming years, I would love that to be my closing act,” Rawlings said.
Rawlings says he did not tackle the problem early on because it took time for him to understand how to use the Mayor’s office to do it properly.
“With time and effort I realized the lever I had to pull was pulling everybody together and coalescing their strategic initiatives together,” he said.
Rawlings calls it the Childhood Poverty Action Lab. The organization brings together all Dallas government agencies to try to understand and address the problem.
Rawlings leaves office in June because of term limits.
