AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) — State agencies are bracing for what could be a tropical system by week’s end.
Forecasters say there’s about a 60% that a tropical disturbance could develop into a named storm in the Gulf of Mexico, and that could impact the coast sometime in the next five days.
Because of this, Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas State Operations Center to transition from a “Level IV” (normal conditions) to a “Level III” (increased readiness) at noon on Tuesday, September 11th.
Governor Abbott says he made the move as a precaution, since many of the forecast models show the potential for dangerous flash flooding.
Here’s a list of agencies getting prepared in case a storm forms:
Texas Department of Public Safety (Texas Highway Patrol)
Texas Department of Transportation
Texas Engineering & Extension Service
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department
Texas Forest Service
Texas Military Department
Texas Department of State Health Services
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
American Red Cross
The Salvation Army
Governor Abbott’s office also wants to remind Texans what to do in case a storm hits:
-Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential documents, supplies and provisions.
-Review hurricane evacuation maps, and select a route for you and your family.
-Plan how all family members and pets will evacuate safely.
-Consider any special needs for individuals with disabilities or the elderly.
-Stay informed about changing weather conditions in and around your area.
-Follow the instructions of local officials if a storm develops.
