Rawlings on Amazon Headquarters: “We’re not going to shy away from this table”

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Mayor of Dallas says North Texas has as good a shot as any when it comes to landing Amazon’s second headquarters.

Mayor Mike Rawlings told WFAA TV’s “Inside Texas Politics” Dallas-Fort Worth has the financial edge over all of the east coast cities on Amazon’s short list, but that they won’t flaunt it while Amazon analyzes the 20 cities on that list.

At least, not yet.

“We’re not going to put those cards on the table, but we’re going to listen to Amazon and what they want,” Rawlings said. “And if we get to a bidding war at that point, we’ll look very closely. We’re not going to shy away from this table.”

Rawlings referred to a Wall Street Journal analysis that weighed several factors Amazon is considering for its “HQ2” and ranked North Texas as the top option.

“We’re going to be 10-12 percent cheaper than the national average,” Rawlings said. “So when you look from the east coast, it’s a lot cheaper to do business here.”

Amazon is expected to make a decision sometime this year. The second headquarters is expected to bring as many as 50,000 high paying jobs to the city that receives it.
