RICHARDSON (WBAP/KLIF News) –The Richardson Police Department received a plaque from community members today as gratitude for how they’ve handled the Sherin Mathews investigation.
Mathews went missing last fall, and her body was found weeks later in a culvert a short distance away from her home.
“We wanted to recognize our police department for their compassion and thorough investigation of the case,” said Richardson resident Bill Allen, who presented the plaque Tuesday morning. “And also to continue the dialogue both nationally and internationally for child welfare.”
The plaque was not presented by a specific community group, rather a band of citizens who collaborated on Next Door — an online forum for neighborhoods to communicate.

“Richardson’s always had that community spirit,” Allen said. “It doesn’t go noticed a lot of the time, but it’s one of those things that didn’t surprise me at all.”
Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said it was a wonderful feeling to be recognized by the community in the wake of what he called the most tragic case he has worked.
The autopsy results for Mathews’ death still have not been released by the Medical Examiner, but Spivey said that will likely happen within the next 10 days.
