Doctor Suspected Physical Abuse of Sherin Mathews

Dallas, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – While the adoptive parents of a toddler found dead in Richardson last month pled the fifth during a custody hearing Wednesday related to their interactions with her, a physician testified that he found several bone fractures last March on 3-year old Sherin Mathews.

During the hearing, Dr. Suzanne Dakil testified that she suspected abuse and reported her concerns to Child Protective Services.

Court testimony revealed that Sherin Mathews was treated for an elbow fracture in September 2016. A review of the 3-year old’s medical history shows that her parents attributed the injury having been pushed off a couch while playing with her sister.

Other highlights of the toddler’s medical record:

*In January, a doctor determined that Sherin was underweight
*Being admitted to the hospital in early February a skin infection and a possible muscle and joint infection; along with injuries in her upper-arm bones.

Mother, Sini Mathews said the injury occurred when she grabbed her daughter when she slipped at a playground. Dr. Dakil testified that the injuries were not consistent with the explanation.

Mrs. Mathews also suggested that her adopted daughter’s bones were fragile because she was fed rice and coffee creamer in India.

After an examination of the girl’s X-rays, Dr. Dakil told the court little Sherin’s injuries occurred after she came to the U.S. She testified that Sherin was not in daycare at the time, and her parents had been identified as her sole caregivers.
.

“At that point, I had no explanation other than this child had been physically abused,” she said.

Wesley and Sini Mathews, who are both in jail want to regain custody of their biological child, who also is 3 years old.

The hearing resumes next month.
