DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The parents of Sherin Mathews could learn Wednesday if they will receive custody of their biological daughter.
A child protective services hearing is set for 1:00 Wednesday afternoon, after weeks of delays. The four-year-old daughter is currently staying with family members who live near Houston.
“In this particular instance, I think it’s unlikely that CPS would agree the child can go home, even if the parents were able to care for her,” said family law expert Claire James.
James said the hearing could get pushed back again now that Sini Mathews, Sherin’s mother, has also been arrested. She and the father, Wesley Mathews, are both behind bars facing child-related charges, though Sini’s bond has been reduced and could bond out.
Either way, James said it will be a tough road ahead for them.
“It’s less likely that CPS will agree for a child to go home to a parent who is currently incarcerated or has pending criminal charges when the criminal charges have to do with endangerment to a child or harming a child,” James said.
