DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) — By the end of Tuesday, Dallas may not be the only North Texas city with a confederate monument task force.
The Denton County Commissioner’s Court is looking to approve its own committee at Tuesday’s meeting. It’s in response to Denton residents speaking out at a commissioner’s court meeting last month asking city and county leaders to remove a monument that sits on the square in front of the Denton County Courthouse.
The monument was build nearly 100 years ago by the Daughters of the Confederacy. On its inscription, it says it’s meant to honor those who sacrificed themselves for the community, and that God created all men equal with certain inalienable rights.
The City of Dallas has a similar task force that recommended that the Robert E. Lee statue in Oak Lawn Park, formerly Lee Park, be moved to a museum. Dallas’ task force has also discussed school and street names and whether or not some of them should be changed.
