DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Hurricane Harvey evacuees staying at the Dallas mega-shelter are moving locations.
City officials say The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center once had more than 3,800 evacuees staying on site, but as of Tuesday afternoon only had just over 200 people inside.
“Operations have scaled down considerably, but we still have clients who are there who need shelter,” said Lisa Morgan of the American Red Cross. “So we’re going to continue providing them with those services.”
The city’s original plan was to be open for three weeks, which would fall at the end of this week. The remaining evacuees will move to the Tommie Allen Recreation Center which was initially open as a shelter but since shut down. It will re-open Wednesday.
Morgan said that even with the significant drop-off, the Red Cross could still use helping hands from the public.
“We still need shelter workers there, because we still have a population. So that’s always needed,” Morgan said. “And if people want to be prepared the next time we have a disaster, we encourage them to sign up to volunteer with us.”
