DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Tuesday is the first day on the job for Dallas’ new top cop.
The city hired U. Renee Hall in July to be its next police chief. She replaces David Brown, who led the department from 2010-2016, as its longest tenured chief dating back to 1960.
Hall is the first female chief of police in Dallas. She comes from Detroit, where she served for nearly two decades — three of those as a deputy chief.
She’s faced with a variety of hurdles in Dallas, including low morale, less than average pay among the rank and file, and a declining number of officers. But according to Hall, those are all similar to the problems she dealt with while working in Detroit.
Hall is the daughter of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty while working a gambling and prostitution case. She has pointed to the familial tie to law enforcement as a reason she joined the rank and file herself.
Dallas City Manager TC Broadnax said when he made the hire that Hall will be a “dynamic chief” and have a great impact on the city.
