GRAND PRAIRIE (WBAP/KLIF News) — The North Texas nonprofit Team Rubicon has filled a handful of vans with supplies and volunteers and sent them down south to help South Texans rebuild.
The organization consists of veterans and first responders whose mission is to help and empower those affected by disasters, like Hurricane Harvey.
“To have a crew of retired military, first responders that are working together that have served the country, to show up at your house and do that heavy lifting for free — you really can’t put a price on that,” said Anita Foster, a volunteer with Team Rubicon.
Foster said they plan on rotating volunteers to and from South Texas for the next several weeks. Five teams made the trip down south Monday morning, with each team consisting of about five volunteers.
Some of the supplies going with them include electric saws, wheel barrows, sledge hammers, and hard hats — to name a few.
“Think about after a disaster — your tools are gone. Your house is flooded, or your home is destroyed from the wind,” Foster said. “You don’t even have a trash bag or work gloves or anything like that.”
And many times, according to Foster, those in need of help don’t know how to begin rebuilding — something Team Rubicon will be assisting with.
“If you’re someone like me, I wouldn’t know how to get a large tree out of my backyard. I don’t own a chainsaw,” Foster said. ” It becomes daunting because you don’t know how to get the work done.”
