DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — People aren’t the only ones being taken care of at hurricane shelters in North Texas.
The American Kennel Club has set up a trailer in both the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas and the Wilkerson Facility shelter in Fort Worth for rescued pets.
“We know the pets are stressed out as well, and pets are family too,” said AKC’s Brandi Hunter. “So we wanted to make sure there was something on the ground for them to go to.”
Hunted said each trailer can hold 65 animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and smaller pets. They come equipped with the necessities like food and water, as well as staff members to take care of them and play with them. They’ll also come with carriers, microchips, scanners, bowls, collars, leashes, crates, and administrative supplies.
And if the pets are friendly, Hunter said people at the shelters can go play with them.
“It is possible that people will be allowed to pet them, but this mainly a place for animals to feel some comfort, just like people need comfort at this time,” Hunter said. “We want animals to be okay, and we want people to be okay. We know animals are family too, and they need a safe space.”
