AUSTIN, Texas (WBAP/KLIF News) — The 2017 Texas wildflower season is expected to arrive sooner and stay longer than usual.

According to experts at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, the north and central parts of the state have received a good amount of fall and winter rain and warmer than usual temperatures in January and February. That means spring is blooming early. Some fields around Austin are already seeing early growth of the fragrant purplish blooms on Texas mountain laurel.

Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Wildflower Center, says prairies and hillsides may see the early arrival of the iconic Texas bluebonnet, Indian paintbrush and a rainbow of other colorful species soon.
