With Pope Francis in critical condition, speculation is mounting over the possibility of his resignation. If he steps down or passes away, a former Dallas bishop could be among the leading candidates to take his place.
The Rise of Cardinal Kevin Farrell
Kevin Farrell, who served as Bishop of the Dallas Catholic Diocese from 2007 to 2016, has steadily ascended within the Catholic Church’s hierarchy.
In August 2016, Pope Francis appointed the Irish-born Farrell to the Roman Curia, elevating him to the rank of cardinal. Since then, he has taken on increasingly significant roles within the Vatican.
In 2019, Pope Francis named Cardinal Farrell as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, a title that grants him the responsibility of overseeing church administration in the event of a papal vacancy. As Camerlengo, he would temporarily lead the church until a new pope is elected by the College of Cardinals.
Now 77 years old, Cardinal Farrell holds several key positions in the Vatican. In 2020, he was appointed president of the Commission for Confidential Matters, and in 2023, he became President of the Vatican City State Supreme Court.
Will Pope Francis Resign?
Pope Francis’ recent hospitalization has fueled conversations about a potential resignation, particularly given the precedent set by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. In 2013, Benedict became the first pope in 600 years to step down, citing declining health.
Though a papal resignation remains rare, it is a possibility. According to the Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law, a pope may resign if the decision is made freely and publicly declared—no formal acceptance is required.
Pope Francis himself has previously acknowledged that he would consider stepping aside if his health prevented him from fulfilling his duties. In 2022, he revealed that he had written a resignation letter shortly after his election in case of medical incapacity. However, he has also repeatedly emphasized that he sees the papacy as a lifelong commitment.
What Happens if Pope Francis Resigns?
Should Pope Francis step down, the process to elect his successor would mirror what happens when a pope passes away. The College of Cardinals would convene in a conclave—a secret gathering where they cast ballots to choose the next pontiff.
To be elected pope, a candidate must secure a two-thirds majority vote. Cardinals eligible to vote must be under the age of 80, and up to four rounds of balloting take place each day until a consensus is reached.
With speculation growing, church leaders remain divided on the likelihood of Pope Francis’ resignation. “Everything is possible,” said Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, the Archbishop of Marseille, when asked about the prospect. Meanwhile, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi has suggested that the idea is more than just conjecture.
As the Catholic Church navigates this uncertain moment, all eyes are on Pope Francis—and what the future may hold for his leadership.
