Texas Senate Passes School Voucher Program

(WBAP/KLIF) Austin – A proposal creating a school choice voucher program has been passed by the Texas Senate.

The vote on Senate Bill 2 took place less than a week after the Texas Senate Education Committee moved the bill forward.

The legislation would create education savings accounts providing parents $10,000.00 of state funds per student to subsidize the cost of private school.

The bill adds an additional $1,500.00 for children with disabilities.

Democratic senators who were unable to amend the bill Wednesday, asked whether education savings accounts will help low-income families. They also expresses concern that a voucher program would financially undermine public schools by taking students and state funds away from local districts.
