PROSPER, Texas – A former preschool teacher in Prosper has been sentenced to prison after four toddlers in her care ingested THC-infused gummies. Anisah Burks, who was employed at Primrose School of Prosper, pleaded guilty on December 6, 2023, to four counts of injury to a child and one count of possession of a controlled substance.
In 2022, four 1-year-olds became seriously ill while attending class after ingesting the gummies. Medical professionals and investigators quickly determined the children’s symptoms were caused by THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The children were rushed to the hospital, but fortunately, they all recovered.
According to Prosper police, Burks fled the scene as emergency responders arrived to evacuate the school. Authorities later discovered a bag of THC gummies in a jacket she had left behind. In the subsequent investigation, Burks admitted to bringing the edibles into the classroom, though the exact manner in which the toddlers obtained them was not detailed in the arrest warrant affidavit.
Primrose School of Prosper took swift action after the incident, terminating Burks’ employment and cooperating with law enforcement. The school also reported the matter to the Texas Department of Family Services’ Child Care Licensing Division.
Burks was sentenced to one year in prison for each of the four children involved and an additional three years for the possession of THC gummies.
