Mike McCarthy Expected to Depart as Head Coach of Dallas Cowboys

DALLAS — Mike McCarthy is not expected to return as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, WFAA confirmed on Monday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCarthy and the Cowboys have not engaged in discussions about a new contract, and McCarthy is now anticipated to be a candidate for head coaching vacancies in New Orleans and Chicago. Last week, reports surfaced that the Cowboys denied a request from the Chicago Bears to interview McCarthy, who is still under contract with Dallas through January 14.

If McCarthy does leave, it would mark the end of his five-year tenure with the Cowboys. Over that period, he led the team to three consecutive 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023. However, the 2024 campaign saw the injury-ravaged Cowboys finish with a disappointing 7-10 record. Despite regular-season success, McCarthy was unable to lead the franchise to an NFC Championship Game, a feat the Cowboys have not achieved in nearly three decades.

The future direction of the Cowboys remains uncertain, as owner and general manager Jerry Jones has yet to indicate his next steps. No reports have linked the team to any specific coaching candidates in the current cycle.

The Cowboys could also face stiff competition in the coaching search, with five other teams — the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders — currently seeking new head coaches.
