Winter Storm Threatens to Disrupt Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Plans

ARLINGTON, Texas — A winter storm forecasted for this week could pose significant challenges for thousands of football fans traveling to the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

While AT&T Stadium in Arlington boasts a retractable roof, icy conditions on the roads leading to Friday night’s College Football Playoff Semifinal between the University of Texas and Ohio State could create obstacles for attendees.

Weather Concerns and Preparations

A wintry mix, including snow, is expected to sweep across North Texas just a day before kickoff, raising concerns about travel safety. In response, city officials and bowl organizers have outlined measures to ensure smooth access to the stadium and minimize potential disruptions.

“We are closely monitoring weather forecasts and are in constant communication with AT&T Stadium and local authorities,” said a spokesperson for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. “Plans are in place to address inclement weather, and we are prepared to share updates with everyone attending this year’s event if necessary.”

Arlington’s public works department plans to pre-treat roads and bridges near the stadium with a brine solution to combat icy conditions. Meanwhile, Arlington police are evaluating whether to equip their vehicles with chains and other cold-weather gear to ensure readiness.

A Look Back

This is not the first time winter weather has threatened a major sporting event in Arlington. During Super Bowl XLV in 2011, heavy snow and ice caused significant disruptions, including injuries to six workers after ice and snow slid off the roof of AT&T Stadium. The weather also delayed the installation of temporary seating for the game.

As North Texas braces for the approaching storm, officials remain committed to prioritizing safety and ensuring fans can enjoy this marquee college football matchup.
