Helene Strengthens to a Category 4 Hurricane as It Nears Florida’s Gulf Coast

CRAWFORDVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Hurricane Helene is close to making landfall on Florida’s northwest coast as a powerful Category 4 storm. It’s already battering the state’s west coast with tropical storm-force winds and has caused hundreds of thousands of power outages. Forecasters warn the enormous system could create a “nightmare” storm surge of up to 20 feet and deliver damaging winds hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S. Hurricane and flash flood warnings extend far beyond the coast up into northern Georgia and western North Carolina.
