FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Fort Worth Police Department and the North Texas community are mourning the loss of an officer who was killed while on duty early Monday morning.
Sergeant Billy Randolph was working a fiery wreck involving an 18-wheeler near Sycamore School Road when he was fatally hit by a suspected drunk driver who was traveling the wrong way.
Fort Worth PD Chief Neil Noakes said Randolph’s death leaves a large void within the department.
“He was a leader in our department but not because he had stripes on his sleeves but because he was always there for his people no matter what,” he said.
Family friend Robert Mitchell read a statement on behalf of Randolph’s family.
“We lost Billy. He dedicated his life for his country and his community. He served four years in the United States Air Force,” he said.
During the Monday press conference, Chief Noakes announced that charges have been filed in connection to Randolph’s death.
25-year-old De Aujalae Evans is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter Causing the Death of a Peace Officer or Firefighter.
The department is hosting a candle light vigil at the South Patrol Division at 3501 West Risinger Road in Fort Worth on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
A temporary memorial set up for Randolph outside the facility is growing as those who knew the fallen officer and strangers pay their respects.
