(WBAP/KLIF) — Could the foods you eat be killing you? That’s the question from the national organization Moms Across America.
The group is making a push to get the U.S. Congress to ban companies from using food ingredients known to cause serious health problems. Moms Across America’s Zen Honeycutt says companies have made their products for other countries without these ingredients, however continue to manufacture them for Americans with them.
Food manufacturing companies are using known cancer-causing ingredients in popular snacks like M & M’s, Skittles, Fruit Loops, Trix, Pediasure, cakes, and cookies because it’s cheaper and allowed by U.S. law. Honeycutt says that food manufacturers produce these same snacks for other countries, without the cancer-causing chemicals because Japan and Europe have banned these ingredients, such as brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, and red dye #3. She says it’s going to take a lot of Texans to petition their local Congressman to issue a ban similar to what California just instituted.
Honeycutt says it’s a difficult task because a lot of lawmakers receive campaign donations from the food manufacturing giants. A number of studies have linked the chemical substances to hyperactivity and neuro-behavioral effects in children, digestive tract problems and an increased risk of cancer.
