ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Arlington Police Department shed more light on a chaotic officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon.

It started with a call about a family dispute over a man’s alleged drug use and refusal for mental health services at a home in the 3700 block of Shady Valley Drive just east of West Pioneer Parkway before 10 a.m.

APD Chief of Staff Lieutenant Courtney White said two parents called 911 to get some help for their 20-year-old son.

“He was exhibiting some behaviors and they tried to get him some help,” she said.

Police said when the officers initially spoke to him, they found no crime had been committed and offered to take him home in their squad car.

As they were about to frisk him, he ran away. Lt. White said because no crime had been committed, the officers did not pursue him.

When officers returned to the family’s home, a 911 call came in reporting an armed man had approached someone and demanded money just a few blocks away.

Police said the description of the suspect matched the man the two officers had just spoken to. As they began a search, the family reported the man returned to the house and got into a pickup truck parked in the driveway.

He left in the truck, reportedly shot through a windshield at an officer posted in front of him, and eventually crashed the car, according to police. The driver in the other vehicle was not injured.

Lt. White said he then ran into a carport at a nearby home, where a responding Arlington police officer shot him after asking him to drop his weapon several times.

As officers put him into handcuffs, they noticed he’d been shot several times. Officers gave him aid and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officers found the man’s gun near the carport amid a subsequent investigation. Lt. White said the family also told police he’d fired several rounds in their home before the police chase even started.

“Obviously he alarmed his family. I mean that would alarm any of us if someone is shooting a firearm inside of a home and we’re already concerned about drug usage,” she said.

The suspect is expected to recover from his injuries. He’s charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault family violence and evading arrest.

Lt. White said the suspect’s name will be released once he’s been discharged from the hospital and booked into the Arlington City Jail.

No officers were injured in the incident. The officers who fired the shots are on paid administrative leave pending a standard internal investigation.
