Truck Driver Admits to Using Drugs Before Bus Crash

The truck driver who ran into a Texas school bus last week has admitted to investigators that he was on drugs at the time of the accident.

Video footage shows 42-year-old Jerry Hernandez’s concrete truck veering into oncoming traffic and ramming into a Hays CISD school bus.

The bus was bringing 44 pre-k students and 11 adults back from the Bastrop Zoo last Friday when the incident occurred around 2 p.m.

A preschooler on the bus and the driver of a third vehicle were killed in the crash.

Hernandez has since admitted to officers that he smoked marijuana the night before, only got a few hours of sleep and consumed cocaine in the morning before work.

He reportedly refused a voluntary blood draw and has not been charged yet.

The bus involved also did not have seatbelts.

Back in 2017, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that required seatbelts on any newly acquired school buses. The district says the bus involved in this particular crash was from 2011.

They add that they’re waiting on the investigation report from DPS to see whether or not seat belts would have made a difference.
