10-term mayor Oscar Trevino is stepping down as the top elected official of North Richland Hills. Trevino was first elected to the city council in 1999 and successfully ran for mayor in 2002. Over his 25 years of service, he has seen a nearly 30% increase in the city’s population, the announcement of the new Peppa Pig theme park, and construction of a new library, recreation center, police station and city hall.

Trevino says he has decided not to run for re-election, as his current term ends in may.

Longtime North Richland Hills Mayor Stepping Down in May

(North Richland Hills, Tx) – After serving his community for 25 years, North Richland Hills Mayor Oscar Trevino will not seek reelection this spring. Mr. Trevino was first elected as a City Council Member in 1999 and as Mayor in 2002. He was re-elected to the mayor’s office 10 times. His current term ends in May.

In a statement to the community, Mayor Trevino said, “I am incredibly grateful for the residents of North Richland Hills and the trust they have bestowed in me to represent them for a quarter century. While DFW has become the 4th largest metropolitan area in the country and North Richland Hills has grown from 55,000 to over 70,000 residents during my time in office, our city continues to be a family-friendly community and a wonderful place to call home. I am proud of the work we have done together to manage the growth and improve North Richland Hills.”

Of the many accomplishments during his tenure, Mayor Trevino is most proud of investments the city has made in its infrastructure, parks, equipment and staff. This includes building a new library, recreation center, senior center, animal shelter, police station, fire stations and city hall, along with more than 20 parks and trails and improvements to Iron Horse Golf Course and NRH2O Family Water Park.

The city also expanded its police and fire departments, equipping them with the best training and tools available. “The safety and security of our community has always been the top priority,” Trevino noted.

As North Richland Hills has grown, Mayor Trevino said the city’s leadership never lost sight of where the community began. “We’ve worked to ensure our original neighborhoods stay well-maintained and vibrant. We’ve redeveloped our oldest parks and are continuously investing in our infrastructure.”

He noted that North Richland Hills has attracted many new businesses in recent years and soon there will be more new businesses and a hotel on the former mall property near North Richland Hills’ new City Hall.

“We have weathered recessions and a pandemic and come back stronger, with the retail vacancy rate down to 6.3%, the lowest since 2004,” he added.

The city also invested over $100 million in its streets while building strong partnerships with regional partners to increase mobility through highway improvements and the addition of TEXRail, which will benefit the community for generations.

“We have focused on providing high-quality services, while being good stewards of the public’s dollars and lowering the tax burden for senior citizens and homeowners,” Trevino said.

Mayor Trevino thanked the residents of North Richland Hills, his elected colleagues, city staff and family. “It has been the honor of my life to serve our community over the past 25 years,” he said.
