DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Funeral services have been set for former longtime North Texas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson.
The Democratic trailblazer died on New Year’s Eve at 88 years old.
A viewing will be held at the Hall of State in Fair Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, January 8.
It will be followed by a prayer service that evening at Concord Church in Dallas from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m..
Johnson’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 9th at Concord Church at 10 amm. Her graveside service will be held at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson was born in Waco on December 3, 1935 and became one of the most powerful Texas Democrats to serve in Washington D.C.
She was the first black woman elected to public office in Dallas in 1972 and served her Congressional district for thirty years.
Johnson, a former nurse and legislator, was the dean of the Texas Congressional delegation before retiring from office in 2022.
Her colleagues said she was effective during her time in the U.S. House and was willing to work with Republicans to get things done.
Johnson’s passing was met with shock and grief from local elected officials and the White House.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson released a statement that said in part:
” Today, our nation, our state, and our city have lost a statesman, a trailblazer, and a champion. And I have lost a dear friend, confidante, and mentor.”
He’s ordered all City of Dallas flags to be flown at half-staff through close of business on January 5th in honor of the late former Congresswoman.
