OSHA Proposes $15,625 Fine for USPS Over Dallas Mail Carrier’s Heat-Related Death

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The United States Postal Service is facing a $15,625 fine in the wake of the heat-related death of a Dallas mail carrier over the summer.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration citation alleges the postal service failed to protect workers on June 20, the day 66-year-old Eugene Gates Junior died.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning on that day when the heat index ranged from 96 to 113 degrees.

The OSHA citation states that exposure to these elements are likely to lead to the development of “serious heat-related illnesses such as but not limited to, heat cramps, heat stress, heat exhaustion, heat and death.”

An autopsy found that gates died from heat and heart disease.
