Duncanville Police Seek Suspects in Violent “Jugging” Incident

DUNCANVILLE – (WBAP/KLIF)- Duncanville Police are searching for at least two suspects believed responsible for a jugging incident in which a man was shot and seriously injured. Police believe the suspects were watching Sebastian Avila as he cashed a check, followed him home, and opened fire after demanding his money.

Avila was in the intensive care unit of an area hospital with serious injuries to his liver; part of his lung was reported as removed as per gunshot wound injuries. The shooting happened about 5:15 pm Friday in the 300 block of Linkwood Drive; River Oaks neighborhood, south of Lion’s Park.

The issue of “jugging” continues to ramp up in headlines as frequency of the crime escalates in North Texas, and nationwide. Suspects are often in cars in the parking lot, or on phones at times, in the lobbies or just outside the doors of banks and check cashing businesses. They follow intended victims, and at the next stop, demand money, often at gunpoint, or rob the cars in which the victims were traveling.

Avila’s cousin Jenny Avile says the crime happened after the victim cashed his check at PLS Check Cashers on Camp Wisdom Road, a few minutes away from his home. Survelliance video shows two masked menapproach Avila, demand money, shoot him, and run away. In the video, you can hear one of the suspects asking “Where that money at??” and “Don’t move homeboy” as he pointed a gun at him. Another survelliance video shows Avila pulling out a gun before he gets shot.

Jenny Avila tells our media partner, WFAA TV, a nearby neighbor heard the gunshots and ran to Avila with a medical kit, using a shirt he ripped and duct tape as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

It’s unclear when Avila may be released from the hospital. Police believe they are looking for a dark colored Dodge Charger vehicle believed used as the suspect’s getaway car.

A Go Fund Me account has been opened for the Avila family’s expenses:
