NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Thousands of unionized Starbucks employees plan to disrupt the company’s National Red Cup Day Thursday morning on one of the coffee giant’s busiest days of the year.
They’re walking off the job to protest an ongoing labor dispute that hasn’t resulted in a contract for employees who first organized in 2021.
It’s being called the “Red Cup Rebellion” Starbucks Workers United. According to the SWU press release, it will be their largest strike ever.
Customers who order a holiday or fall beverage at Starbucks today gets a free reusable red cup. It’s a promotion that reportedly resulted in the highest single sales day of 2022.
Shraya Chaudhari is a union representative in DFW. She told our media partner WFAA TV the date of the strike was strategic.
“We know that having a strike on this day will definitely hurt the company,” she said. Workers at Starbucks in Denton and Bartonville are planning to strike today.
The strike comes on the heels of the Starbucks reporting record sales in the company’s Q3 and Full Fiscal 2023 results.
Employees have long-complained about issues with staffing shortages and are negotiating for better pay, scheduling improvement and benefits.
The company did agree to give employees 3% pay raises and new benefits to some of workers next year.
Starbucks said it’ remain’s ready to continue with in-person negotiations with unions.
