DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Jury selection is set to begin Monday for the trial of the man accused of killing two hospital workers at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in October 22, 2022.
Prosecutors argue 31-year-old Nestor Hernandez was visiting his girlfriend after giving birth to their child when he began pistol whipping her.
That’s when hospital social worker 45-year-old Jaqueline Pokuaa walked into the room and Hernandez allegedly shot her.
He’s then accused of fatally shooting nurse 63-year-old Katie Annette Flowers who looked in after hearing the shots.
At the time of the shooting, the convicted-felon was out on parole for aggravated robbery and was wearing an ankle monitor. He’d been arrested for cutting the monitor off months before the shooting occurred.
After a brief standoff, police arrested Hernandez.
Hernandez is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
If convicted, he’ll automatically get life without parole.
In reaction to the killings, two bills were passed this legislative session. Senate Bill 1004 makes cutting off ankle monitors a criminal offense.
Senate Bill 820 increases the penalty for assaulting certain hospital staff from a misdemeanor to a felony.
