ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The United Auto Workers Union confirmed Tuesday that its local chapter in Arlington has shut down General Motors largest plant.
In a social media post, workers could be seen walking out of the plant on Abrams Street near 360.
Local 276 president Keith Crowell said GM’s Arlington plant employs around 5,000 people and is responsible for 35 % of the company’s profits.
This employee detailed the moment she found out that an expected walkout was now a reality.
“We were working and they were blowing a whistle. They were just saying that now we are officially on strike and everybody walk off calmly and be considerate…and then we did meet at the union hall,” she said.
Today’s development comes on the heels of an expansion of the strike at Stellantis’ largest assembly plant in Detroit on Monday.
UAW began striking against GM, Stellantis and Ford over a month ago demanding better pay, a shorter work week and pensions for new hires.
In a release, UAW President Shawn Fain made the intent of the “Stand Up Strike” movement clear.
“Another record quarter, another record year. As we’ve said for months: record profits equal record contracts,” he said. “It’s time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share.”
Negotiations between the UAW and the big three automakers continue.
This is a developing story.
