(WBAP/KLIF) — Texas has started rolling out a new floating barrier on the Rio Grande. The state’s move on Friday is the latest escalation of republican Governor Greg Abbott’s multibillion-dollar effort to secure the U.S. border with Mexico.
The orange buoys were unloaded from the trailers in the border city of eagle pass and are set for deployment on the river to deter illegal border crossings, which in turn should help prevent drownings.
Environmentalists questioned the impact the buoys may have on the river and have filed a lawsuit to prevent the buoy deployment.
