CARROLLTON (WBAP/KLIF) – The Carrollton Police Department identified the fallen Officer as Officer Steve Nothem.
According to Carrollton Police, Nothem was assisting on a DWI investigation before 11 p.m. Tuesday night on President George Bush Turnpike. He was inside his patrol car when he was hit by a vehicle driven by 82-year-old Phillip Parker. Both Parker and Officer Nothem died.
Officer Nothem’s death is the Carrollton Police Department’s first line of duty death.
The Officer leaves behind a wife, three sons, and a 1-year-old daughter.
The crash is under investigation.
CARROLLTON (WBAP/KLIF) – A Carrollton police officer died in the line of duty overnight.
Spokesperson Jolene DeVito said in a press release that the officer was assisting another officer on a DWI investigation in the westbound lanes of East President George Bush Tollway when he was hit by a passing driver just before 10:30 pm. That driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer was transported to Texas Presbytarian Hospital in Plano where he was pronounced dead.
Overnight fellow officers lined up outside Texas Health for a procession transporting the officer to the Collin County Medical Examiners Office.
That procession got underway just before 6 am. The officer’s name will be released later today. He was a married father of 4 who served the force for 3 years.
Acting Carrollton Police Chief Rex Redden was on hand outside the hospital emergency room to talk to reporters. Rex Redden said, “This was the first Carrollton police officer killed in a line of duty and it has hit the department hard.”
