AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – More information about the law enforcement response to last month’s Uvalde elementary school massacre was revealed during a Texas Senate hearing on Tuesday.
19 students and two teachers were killed after a gunman opened fire inside Robb Elementary School.
“There is compelling evidence that the law enforcement response to the attack at Robb Elementary was an abject failure,” DPS Director Steve McCraw told the Senate committee investigating the attack.
McCraw said that there was an efficient Police presence, and equipment, to engage the shooter within three minutes of his entering the building. But, the classroom wasn’t breached and the shooter wasn’t killed until an hour after the attack started.
According to McCraw, the school district Police Commander was looking for keys to the classroom, but it’s not believed the door was locked.
“We’ll have some experts testify,” said Director McCraw. “There’s tools, but we had them go in to see what they could breach. What’s important is, you don’t have to wait for a key.”
McCraw also explained that Police radios didn’t work properly during the response.
More legislative hearings are expected in days and weeks to come.
