LEWISVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Lewisville Fire Department is urging residents to exercise caution on the lakes and rivers after responding to three drowning calls on Tuesday.

Around 6 pm, the body of a 43-year-old woman was recovered at Little Elm Park on Lewisville Lake.

The department also pulled a 25-year old man from the lake in the popular Sneaky Pete’s area around 7:40 p.m. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Crews also helped to find a man reported missing in the Denton Greenbelt area of Lewisville Lake.

Captain Michael McComis is the Lewisville Fire Department’s dive team coordinator and said people don’t realize how quickly things can change under the water.

“People may be wading or walking in what they think is shallow water and then the next step they may be in water over their head and they have no idea…there’s nothing that gives them any clue that the ground changes as quick as it does below the surface,” he said.

It’s a scary situation that can happen instantaneously.

“It’s one second they’re there and then they’re gone and never seen again. It’s not a prolonged thing where people struggle for an extended period of time. Usually they slip before the surface and then its done,” said Captain McComis.

He’s urging everyone on the water to use a life jacket or other types of personal floatation devices.

It’s a simple act Captain McComis stressed will save one’s life. “Anytime you’re in the water recreating, especially in lakes, rivers and streams then you need to be as safe as you can,” he said.
