PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – The Plano Police Department is discouraging panhandling and encouraging people in need to reach out to local non-profit groups opposed to standing on medians or walking through traffic.

The city is posting pedestrian safety signs at its 25 busiest intersections. Plano Police Chief Ed Drain warned that that asking for money from the street can be dangerous for both panhandlers and drivers.

“We understand that there are people in need in our community and we have resources in the community where people can be helped,” Chief Drain stressed.

According to the City of Plano, the signs are designed to remind people of the dangers of giving money at these locations. City officials are asking residents to donate through nonprofits, and are urging people in need to gather resources through the same avenue.
