DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A local children’s advocacy group is addressing misconceptions surrounding sex trafficking.
Earlier this week it was made public that A North Richland Hills 15-year-old went missing from a Mavs game several weeks ago. She was recently found on in an Oklahoma city hotel room and it’s believed she was being prostituted by a convicted sex offender. The teen was seen on surveillance video leaving the Mavs game with a man. It’s not clear if he was among eight arrested in Oklahoma City after the girl was located.
Caroline Roberts is the senior staff attorney at Children at Risk and said in many cases, it’s not strangers that are trafficking young girls.
“It’s not as common that children are trafficked by a complete stranger,” Roberts said. “They are usually trafficked by someone that they know. Traffickers usually go through the process of grooming and getting to know the child. So that’s one thing to be aware of and make your children aware of.”
Child advocacy groups recommend open conversations about the dangers of sex trafficking with parents and kids.
