Texas (WBAP/KLIF) – Today, February 15 marks the first anniversary of the deadly 2021 blackouts triggered by an historic multi-day weather event in across the Lone Star State.

As a result of the blackouts in frigid cold temperatures, hundreds of Texans lost their lives; hundreds of thousands more were left without power or water service.

On this day last year on this day, MedStar crews responded to a record 732 calls in 1 day.. That compares to a ‘typical’ February response volume of 420 calls/day.  A 74% increase in response volume.

A year after that traumatic catastrophe the state remains at risk from similar extreme weather events and a freeze-vulnerable gas supply, despite some positive steps by state legislators and regulators.

Today, members of the Texas House of Representatives Members of the Texas House of Representatives are hosting a summit on the Winter Storm Uri anniversary to uncover the impact of the storm on Texans. You can watch in person at the Capitol or view online here.
