ROCKWALL (WBAP/KLIF) – A visitation and funeral service were held on Thursday for fallen Mesquite Police Officer Richard Houston at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall.
Sgt. Houston was killed last Friday outside a Mesquite grocery store after responding to a disturbance call. The suspect is charged with Capital Murder of a Peace Officer.
During Thursday’s service, Mesquite Police Chief David Gill said Sgt. Houston was passionate about the community he served.
“Richard always wanted to be a Police Officer, but most, he wanted to be a Mesquite Police Officer,” said Chief Gill. “His father was a Mesquite Police Officer and he told me he never wanted to be a Police Officer anywhere else.”
Police Officers from across North Texas, and around the state, attended Thursday’s service.
Neighboring agencies, including the Dallas Police Department, assisted Mesquite Police with Patrols.
Sgt. Houston leaves behind a wife and three children.
