State Lawmakers Are One Step Closer To Making School Vouchers A Reality in Texas

Back to school and happy time! Pile of books and backpack with Texas flag on the desk at the elementary school.

(WBAP/KLIF) – AUSTIN, TX – Last week, the house Public Education Committee voted to advance Senate Bill 2, which sets a billion dollar cap on voucher spending for the first two years. Lawmakers debated for hours, expressing concerns over the impact on teacher pay, retirement systems, public school funding, and which students would gain access to the vouchers. The bill now moves to the Calendars Committee and then to the full house where Speaker Dustin Burrows has shown optimism that the Governor’s top legislative priority will pass.
