Texas Lawmaker Introduces Bill To Clarify Medical Exceptions In State’s Abortion Ban

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas lawmaker has introduced a bill to change the language in the state’s abortion laws to make it clearer when exceptions can be made to save the life of the patient. Republican state. Sen. Bryan Hughes, who authored the bill, helped pioneer the state’s so-called “heartbeat act.” He says the legislation would clarify what constitutes a medical emergency to help doctors better understand the law. The bill, introduced on Friday, would still require patients to have a medical emergency for doctors to perform an abortion but requires doctors to receive training about the law. Reproductive rights advocates say the exceptions that are currently allowed are too vague and doctors fear retaliation.
